New ‘Veep’ Trailer Finds Selina Meyer as POTUS, Teases Hugh Laurie’s Role
April 17th promises to be a night of big laughs and lots of blood as HBO scheduled Game of Thrones‘ Season Five premiere on the same Sunday night as the returns of Silicon Valley and the fourth season of Veep. While the political comedy might lack the gore of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series, the world of Veep is every bit as cutthroat as Season Four of the series finds the titular Vice President Selina Meyer, portrayed by Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, settling into the role of POTUS after being elevated to the Oval Office at the end of last season.
In addition to showcasing the darkly comic inner workings of Washington, D.C. – Meyer’s dealings with issues like Israel, the military and reelection are hinted at in the trailer – the sneak peek also teases at a possible rift between Meyer and her right-hand man and personal aide Gary Walsh, played by Tony Hale.
The trailer also offers up the first look at the biggest Season Four addition, House actor Hugh Laurie, who joins the Veep cast in an unspecified role. He’s rumored to play Selina Meyer’s new Veep, but in a scene that seems to mimic the State of the Union, actor Phil Reeves’ Senator Andrew Doyle is sitting in the Vice President’s chair.)
The cast will also see the return of Meyer’s main staff – played by Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Matt Walsh, Reid Scott and Timothy Simons – as well as guest stars like Kevin Dunn (as the White House Chief of Staff), Diedrich Bader (a campaign manager) and Gary Cole, who plays the President’s Senior Strategist.
