See Laura Cantrell’s Bewitching ‘Can’t Wait’ Video
Laura Cantrell‘s clear-as-a-bell vocals aren’t the only magic at work in her latest video for “Can’t Wait,” one of the standout tracks from the Nashville-born singer’s spellbinding 2014 LP, No Way There From Here. Since her 2000 debut, Not the Trembling Kind, Cantrell has confidently walked the line between classic country and modern pop. Similarly, in the new clip, the former Wall Street banker is cast in the role of classic Sixties housewife (with a delightfully magical twist), who’s getting ready to welcome her husband home from a hard day at the office, making sure there’s a hearty dinner on the table and something even more special planned for dessert.
Directed by Hugh Hales-Tooke, who helmed Cantrell’s “All the Girls Are Complicated” video earlier this year, the clip’s Donna Reed-meets-Mary Poppins special effects bring a light, lively touch to the song’s themes of longing and anticipation. For the location, the director used a home in suburban New Jersey, chosen for its classic mid-Sixties aesthetic.
“The setting felt very Bewitched,” Cantrell tells Rolling Stone Country, a reference to the Sixties sitcom about a suburban housewife who also happens to be a witch. “The notion of a seemingly perfect suburban home not quite being what it seems led to the idea of all the household items being animated and running amok. The end result achieves a sense of fun and mirrors the classic pop of the song itself, instantly recognizable but with subtle twists and gently subversive touches.”
Cantrell, who left the household chores behind earlier this year for shows in Spain, concludes a three-week residency at Atwood’s in Boston on November 17th. No Way There From Here is out now on Thrift Shop Recordings.
