Stephen Colbert Unveils Christmas-Heavy Starbucks Cup on ‘Late Show’
Starbucks has faced threats of a boycott after the coffee giant unveiled simple red-and-green cups for the holidays, seasonal vessels that “removed Christmas” as people like Donald Trump have bemoaned. On Wednesday’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert tackled the issue of Starbucks’ controversial winter cups and even suggested his own version to appease the Christmas-loving masses.
“I can see why people might be all frothed up about this. Now Starbucks is completely devoid of any trace of the holiday besides the Christmas tree ornaments, advent calendar, CDs of Christmas music, Christmas-themed gift cards, Christmas cookies and giant displays of their Christmas Blend coffee,” Colbert said. “And now Starbucks customers are disappointed that instead of an ultra-Christmasy cup, they’re getting one of these. I mean, look, it’s just red and green. Which obviously could represent anything: Different types of bell peppers, two-thirds of a stoplight, a frog that was run over by a bus. Anything.”
As an alternative, Colbert then debuted his ornament-heavy, Manger scene-topped coffee cup that’s attached to a mini-Christmas tree. “Don’t fight this: Give the customers a cup so crammed with Christmas, they’ll be picking tinsel out of their Yule log for months,” Colbert joked. “What a festive way to start my day.”
