‘Game of Thrones’ Season Five: Watch HBO’s ‘Day in the Life’ Doc
Game of Thrones is one of the most intricately plotted, lavishly constructed series in TV history, with numerous storylines criss-crossing and multiple crews filming – often simultaneously – around Europe. Thanks to HBO’s “A Day in the Life” special, which aired Sunday night, fans can glimpse into the intricate madness that makes the show tick – from coordinating cross-country hair and make-up continuity to constructing the fantasy series’ spellbinding sets.
The 26-minute special, available above, finds crews shooting in Croatia, Ireland and Spain, with producers Chris Newman, Duncan Muggoch and Peter Welter Soler offering their insights into the hectic process. “It must be like parachuting,” Newman says. “Don’t worry about the height you’re jumping – just make sure the parachute works.”
Various moments tease plot details from Season Five, including a third episode meeting between Cersei (Lena Headey) and the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) at the Water Gardens of Dorne, filmed at the lavish Alcázar of Seville castle in Spain. Headey is shown goofing around with Ian Beattie (who plays Meryn Trant) between takes, lightening the mood of their intense scene. The documentary previews several other new locations for Season Five, including the Hardhome fishing village (Magheramorne Quarry in Ireland).
Game of Thrones Season Five will premiere April 12th on HBO. In the meantime, fans can satisfy their cravings by re-watching the season’s epic trailer, which features sand snakes, dragons and a haggard-looking Tyrion. “Justice has a price” is the tagline of the clip, which also previews a dramatic exchange from Littlefinger to Sansa (“There’s no justice in this world – not unless we make it. Avenge them.”) and Daenerys promising “I’m not going to stop the wheel – I’m going to break the wheel.”
