Watch Ellen, Adele’s Missed Connection in ‘Hello’ Spoof
Ellen DeGeneres claims she’s the inspiration for Adele‘s latest single “Hello” and proves it during a hilarious spoof of the song and its melancholy video.
“A lot of people don’t realize her new song is based on a conversation that we had,” the host begins before cutting to shots of the Adele video and a sepia-toned DeGeneres answering an even older and clunkier phone than the flip-phone Adele uses in her clip. Over the course of the phone call, the comedian can’t understand what Adele is saying because of the connection and her own snacking as the singer sadly looks at a photo of the talk show host on her desk.
Before getting to the chorus of “Hello,” DeGeneres gets another phone call and puts Adele on hold. On the other line is Drake singing “Hotline Bling,” with DeGeneres complaining about how slowly Adele speaks. Trying to switch back to her first phone call, she drops both, only to be called by a third person: Lionel Richie singing his own “Hello.”
Both Richie and Adele have joked about their same-named, sad-phone-call tracks since the newest “Hello” video dropped. A video of both singers saying “Hello” went viral just before Richie posted an Instagram picture of Adele’s single cover and a still from his video. Similarly, Adele told BBC Radio 1 that she and Richie should engage in a “Hello-Off.” “We’ve definitely got to do something, me and Lionel,” the singer noted.
