Grimes Drops New, Self-Directed Video ‘Flesh Without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream’
Three years after the success of her 2012 breakout, Visions, Grimes has finalized the details of her new LP, Art Angels. The Montreal “cyborg-pop” artist released a video for two new, uncharacteristically guitar-driven tracks: “Flesh Without Blood” and “Life in the Vivid Dream.”
After the video was leaked earlier on Vimeo, Grimes officially premiered the clip on Vevo. Written, directed and edited by the artist herself (and filmed by her brother, Mac Boucher), the video is split into two acts: “Act I. Flesh, Without Blood” and “Act II. Life in the Vivid Dream,” in which Grimes assumes a variety of cartoonish characters.
In the first act — a biting, punk-pop breakup jam — she meanders about a basketball court decked in frilly, Rococo finery, reemerges as a dreamy, murderous angel in a pink cowboy hat and morphs into a slinky mob boss feasting on plate of spaghetti before settling down in a grotto to play video games. “I saw a light in you,” she sings sweetly. “Going out as I closed our window/ You never liked me anyway.”
In a recent interview with Sirius XM, Grimes described her upcoming album as “gothic, industrial and country.” “Each song is very very distinct. [Art Angels] is a definite step forward from Visions,” she said. “I really worked past that, technically and artistically. It’s really important that the first single is my song and that I produced it.”
