Primal Scream Book Rare North American Tour
Scottish rockers Primal Scream, who last played a short run of California dates in 2013, will return for a slightly longer North American tour in May. The trek, which begins with an appearance at Austin Psych Fest, includes dates in the south and northeast.
The group last put out an album in 2013, More Light, which – at the time – was its first studio album in five years. It featured guest appearances by Robert Plant, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields and the Pop Group’s Mark Stewart and onetime Jellyfish member Jason Falkner.
The latter musician joined the band on its single, “It’s Alright, It’s OK,” for which it released a video. “I wanted to convey coming out of a dark time and into a good one,” frontman Bobbie Gillespie said of the song at the time, telling Rolling Stone that he wanted to make a song that was “sophisticated, layered, cinematic and orchestral.”
Other than the West Coast tour, the last time the band toured the U.S. was another short run in 2009.
Last year, founding Primal Scream guitarist and bassist Robert “Throb” Young – who’d left the group in 2006 – died of unspecified, yet likely natural, causes at the age of 49. Guitarist Barrie Cadogan has been playing guitar with the band since Young’s departure.
The group’s frontman, Bobby Gillespie, released a statement at the time of the guitarist’s death, calling his former bandmate a “beautiful and deeply soulful man.” He went on to say, “[Young] was an irreplaceable talent, much admired amongst his peers. In the words of Johnny Marr, ‘Throb with a gold top Les Paul – unbeatable.’ He was a true rock and roller.”
