‘Wet Hot American Summer’ Reboot Trailer Features All-Star Cast
After teasing the upcoming Wet Hot American Summer reboot with a goofy, VHS-tinted teaser, Netflix has offered an official trailer with a hilarious, enticing look at the star-studded prequel series, First Day of Camp.
The clip begins with talk of blossoming summer love and fun, as well as an uncomfortable Camp Firewood meeting that’s literally crashed by Paul Rudd’s surly, too-cool counselor Andy. When chastised for being a week late, Andy replies: “Whatever. It smells weird. Who beefed?” (Notably, the counselor supervisor is played by H. Jon Benjamin, and with any luck, First Day of Camp will reveal some ridiculous connection between this character and the can of vegetables he voiced in the original movie.)
The antics only get goofier with Bradley Cooper and Amy Poehler’s drama geeks demanding the best from their pitiful proteges, while Christopher Meloni’s war-scarred cafeteria chef, Gene, begins his tormented descent into madness. The rest of the returning cast appears as well, including Elizabeth Banks, Molly Shannon, David Hyde Pierce, Janeane Garofalo, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Zak Orth, Joe Lo Truglio, Judah Friedlander, Marguerite Moreau and Michael Showalter, who will revise his role as the lovable goofus, Coop — and portray President Ronald Reagan.
The new trailer also shows off the all-star supporting cast set to make their own Camp Firewood memories. Kristen Wiig joins as a lascivious, suggestive counselor, while Jason Schwartzman, Jordan Peele, Michael Cera, Josh Charles, Chris Pine, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Lake Bell are also set to appear. Capping it all off, First Day of Camp will also feature Mad Men co-stars John Slattery and Jon Hamm, with the latter ostensibly playing one of Gene’s old army buddies who tracks him down to settle a score.
The eight episode-run of Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp arrives on Netflix July 31st. The limited-run series was co-written by original scribes, Showalter and David Wain, and Wain will once again direct.
