Watch Naomi Campbell in Anohni’s Powerful, Gorgeous ‘Drone Bomb Me’ Clip
Anohni has debuted the touching, powerful video for her latest single “Drone Bomb Me.” The track will appear on her upcoming album Hopelessness, due out May 6th.
The clip stars supermodel Naomi Campbell, who spends most of the video sitting in a chair lip-synching to the electronic track. Her face is covered in tears as she delivers the song, and interspersed between those moments, male dancers are menacingly contorting their bodies and an upright Campbell is posing seductively. Nabil directed the clip while Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci is billed as its art director.
“It’s a love song from the perspective of a girl in Afghanistan, say a nine-year-old girl whose family’s been killed by a drone bomb,” Anohni explained to BBC’s Annie Mac (via Spin). “She is kind of looking up at the sky, and she’s gotten herself to a place where she just wants to be killed by a drone bomb too.”
Last month, Anohni — who previously recorded as Antony and the Johnsons — was up for an Oscar against Lady Gaga, the Weeknd and the night’s winner, Sam Smith. She was nominated for Best Original Song for “Manta Ray,” her collaboration with composer J. Ralph for the documentary Racing Extinction. Anohni penned an open letter just before the ceremony about her decision to boycott the Oscars due to her omission from the slate of performers. “I was not invited to perform because I am relatively unknown in the U.S., singing a song about ecocide, and that might not sell advertising space,” she said.
