Watch Jimmy Kimmel Quiz Kids on Gay Marriage
Jimmy Kimmel tapped into the Darndest Things school of comedy on Monday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, sending a producer and cameraman out to the street to find out what kids knew about gay marriage in light of the Supreme Court’s recent marriage equality ruling.
Per Kimmel, the bit was inspired by the frequent question posed by gay marriage critics, “How do I explain this to my kids?” As it turns out, today’s youth is, for the most part, understanding and accepting of gay marriage — so long as they hear the question correctly. “I’ve got a broken leg,” one girl proudly stated after she was asked if she knew what made somebody gay.
Elsewhere, another girl remained confident when discussing the subject. When asked whether the concept of gay marriage was difficult to understand, she paused, pursed her lips and said, “For some kids!” She went on to assert that anyone should be able to get married, if they were old enough; and that someday she would like to get married as well: “When I’m 30.”
Kimmel plucked choice responses from other kids, like the boy who was asked why someone would want to get married and responded, “Umm, because they’re pregnant?” Another boy also said marriage should be available to everyone, but then stated his own reason why he would never tie the knot: “Because when you get married, the other person is entitled to any money the other person has.”
Children have provided plenty of comedic gold on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the past, most notably at their expense as part of Kimmel’s annual challenge to parents to temporarily ruin their kids’ Halloween by telling them they ate all their candy. More recently, Kimmel placed parents at the mercy of their spawn, asking children who they loved more: mom or dad?
