Watch Josh Homme, Jesse Hughes Mull Absurd Album Titles in New Doc Clip
Josh Homme and his Eagles of Death Metal cohort Jesse “The Devil” Hughes run through a handful of increasingly ridiculous prospective titles for their new LP in this exclusive clip from The Redemption of the Devil, a new documentary about Hughes that arrives today on iTunes.
Presented by Vice, the film offers a no-nonsense look at Hughes’ life and its surreal combination of politics, music, religion and sex. The doc finds Hughes, a fierce conservative, becoming an ordained Catholic minister and considering a re-entry into the world of politics, all the while trying to maintain custody of his only child and a healthy relationship with former adult-film star Tuesday Cross.
Hughes tackles these challenges with the wicked sense of humor he and Homme share, and in this clip, the pair bounce prospective album title ideas off each other like the old friends they are. Considering their previous accomplishments (Heart On; Peace, Love and Death Metal; and Homme’s personal favorite, Death by Sexy), they don’t take the task lightly.
Among the working titles: Stylus Eruptus, Crazerbeam and Ladies Only, the latter of which would feature Homme and Hughes on the cover, in drag, nestled among a group of women waiting in line for a club. Homme also adds, “I can prove this with the math — I’ll show you my work — that the gnarliest, most controversial album title of all just says: Vagina.”
Of course, none of those became the title of Eagles of Death Metal’s fourth LP, Zipper Down, the band’s first album since 2008’s Heart On, which also sees release today. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Homme discussed the group’s meticulous craft and haphazard aura.
“I just think at the end of the day we don’t really take ourselves that serious, you know?” he said. “That just means that tons of desire and passion for music goes into making it, but we also realize that the best possible scenario for fans of music is when you’re kind of like, ‘Don’t worry about it. It’s cool, man.'”
