Trevor Noah Promises ‘Nothing’s Going to Change’ in ‘Daily Show’ Promo
Put your vuvuzela back in the closet – Trevor Noah is taking over as the new Daily Show host later this month, but the South African comedian isn’t planning any dramatic cultural shifts. “It’s still The Daily Show – nothing’s going to change,” he says in a goofy promo clip, after correspondents Jessica Williams, Hasan Minhaj and Jordan Klepper welcome their boss with offers to play cricket and rugby.
“Maybe he’s right, ya know? A zebra shouldn’t change its stripes,” Williams says. Turns out Noah does have one change planned: the pronunciation of “zebra.”
In a second promo, Williams and John Hodgman work to out-brownnose each other, offering the host coffee, a bagel – and even a puppy. Noah tells them to relax, easing the mood by complimenting Hodgman’s distinguished mustache. But that only pushes the correspondent to go the extra (painful) mile.
The 31-year-old Noah will make his Daily Show debut September 28th on Comedy Central. The comic, who previously made a handful of appearances on the program, will replace longtime host Jon Stewart, who taped his final episode on August 6th.
Many critics praised the series for the Noah hire, but the host faced a quick backlash over several old tweets and jokes that were widely criticized as anti-Semitic, racist and sexist.
“To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian,” Noah tweeted in response. Comedy Central stood by the comic, and Stewart called Noah “an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual.”
