Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane Reunite for Trump-Themed ‘Producers’ Sequel
The Producers stars Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane reunited for Jimmy Kimmel’s post-Oscars special to appear in a trailer for a faux-sequel to their hit musical. “Just in time for the election, it’s a story that starts off funny then gets really, really depressing,” the trailer warns of Trumped, which finds the two producers hopping aboard the runaway train known as Donald Trump.
“Max, do you realize that under the right circumstances it might be possible for us to make more money from a losing candidate than from a winner? First we find a bad candidate, then we raise money like crazy and we promise all the donors an ambassadorship, to Italy or Sweden or Armenia,” Broderick’s Bloom proposes, planting the seed of the Trump campaign.
“Then when the public figures out what a nutcase our guy is, he drops out of the race…” “… and we keep all the dough,” Lane’s Bialystock chimes in. “This candidate, he’s gotta be the worst candidate in history. A real trainwreck, a schmuck, a putz, a grade-A world-class gold-plated nincompoop. Where would we ever find a buffoon like that?” Enter Trump.
From there, the producers raise $25 million, only to find that, no matter what Trump says, his approval rating and votes keeps soaring. “I can’t believe this; it’s not possible,” Bialystock says, marveling at Trump’s success. “Did he question John McCain’s war heroism? Did he say we should forcibly kick out 11 million immigrants? Did he propose banning all 1 billion Muslims from entering the U.S.?”
With Trump’s GOP nomination all but sealed, Bialystock and Bloom are forced to put on their musical dedicated to the mogul. “He’s building a wall! A thousand feet tall! Don’t worry because the Mexicans will pay for it all,” they sing during the musical number in “a movie that will make America great again.”
