Robert Durst Pleads Guilty to Gun Charges
Robert Durst, the New York real estate heir and murder suspect at the center of HBO’s The Jinx, pleaded guilty Wednesday in New Orleans federal court to illegally possessing a .38-caliber revolver. Under a plea bargain, Durst will be sentenced to 85 months in federal prison, The New York Times reports.
Durst was arrested by the FBI in March 2015 at New Orleans’ JW Marriott Hotel, where he’d registered using an alias, after authorities discovered the handgun during a search. As a convicted felon, it was illegal for Durst to possess a firearm. Durst will eventually be transferred to a Los Angeles federal prison to face charges of murdering former friend Susan Berman. Under conditions of the plea agreement, the prosecution has until August 18th to arraign him.
The family of Durst’s first wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst, who went missing in 1982, filed a $100 million lawsuit against Durst in December, contending that the millionaire “murdered Kathleen.” McCormack’s brother James filed a separate civil suit against Durst in October.
In 2003, a Texas jury acquitted Durst of murdering neighbor Morris Black. Durst, who is worth over $100 million, later pleaded guilty to bond jumping and evidence tampering connected to that case.
The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, a six-part miniseries focusing on Durst’s murder charges, aired February and March 2015. The documentary infamously ended with Durst, seemingly unaware of his microphone being recorded, saying, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
