Watch Bruce Springsteen’s Surprise Appearance at In-Law’s Rock Show
One day after commanding the stage with U2 at Madison Square Garden, Bruce Springsteen made a lower-key guest appearance on Saturday: assisting his brother-in-law Michael Scialfa’s band, Timepiece, during a private party at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Billboard reports. The rock legend sang lead on two covers, Van Morrison‘s “Brown Eyed Girl” and Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s “Born on the Bayou,” though he spent most of the evening in the background playing rhythm guitar.
A fan-filmed video of the show features the band performing Wilson Pickett‘s “634-5789,” with Springsteen cranking out a bluesy guitar solo midway through. The rocker’s wife, Patti Scialfa, sings back-up vocals and dances around the stage on that track, then tackles lead vocals on Smokey Robinson and the Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me.”
The New Jersey native also made a surprise appearance at the Wonder Bar in July with Joe Grushecky, crashing the stage for a 15-song, two-hour set filled with classics like “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” Grushecky, a special education teacher in Pittsburgh, has been friends with the rocker for over three decades. (Springsteen produced his 1995 LP, American Babylon, and they briefly toured the club circuit together.)
For his epic U2 cameo, Springsteen traded lines with Bono on “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and added powerhouse belting to a cover of Ben E. King‘s “Stand By Me.” “The kid’s a star!” Bono told the crowd as Springsteen walked off-stage. “The kid’s a star! He can keep the guitar.”
