Watch Jimmy Fallon, Jack Black Remake Extreme’s ‘More Than Words’ Video
Jimmy Fallon‘s frequent musical sketches have seen the Tonight Show host impersonate Neil Young, explore the History of Rap and create such a fervor for lip sync battles that he needed to start its own spinoff. On Monday night’s episode, Fallon and guest Jack Black took their shared love of music to a new extreme, literally, when the pair busted out hair metal wigs and sweet falsetto for a shot-for-shot remake of the video for Extreme’s 1991 chart-topping ballad.
In the remake, Black portrays Extreme singer Gary Cherone while Fallon, acoustic guitar in hand, takes on the role of Nuno Bettencourt. This isn’t some next-level lip sync battle either; Black and Fallon actually sing in perfect harmony as they perform the Extreme II: Pornograffiti lighters-raising smash. The remake even stays true to the original’s black-and-white palette.
The shot-for-shot remake also captures some of the Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris-directed video’s finer details, from the dude with his feet up apathetically reading a magazine to Bettencourt’s nail-polished left hand and fixed stare into the camera to Cherone’s long hair slung over his right shoulder.
For comparison, here’s Extreme’s original “More Than Words” video:
Fallon’s shot-for-shot remake is also the best ode to the “More Than Words” video since “Weird Al” Yankovic used it for the basis of his “You Don’t Love Me Anymore” in 1992:
