Watch Exhilarating Trailer for Rush’s Concert Film ‘R40 Live’
In August, Rush wrapped what they advertised would be “their last major tour of this magnitude.” Thankfully for fans of the prog rock legends, a lasting document of the group’s final major trek will be released next month as R40 Live, a 3-CD/Blu-ray package capturing the band’s June 17th and 19th, 2015 performances in their hometown Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. Packed with a set list spanning the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band’s four-decade history, R40 Live arrives November 20th.
As evidenced by the concert film’s trailer, 14 cameras filmed the action to create a feature film-style presentation. The concerts’ set design was also unique to the latest Rush tour, as the band attempted to mimic previous stage designs from throughout their live history in accordance to the release date of whichever tracks they were performing.
R40 Live features rarities like “Xanadu,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Lakeside Park” and, perhaps the biggest surprise, the first ever live performance of Signals‘ “Losing It,” featuring violinist Ben Mink (who also appeared on the 1982 studio version of the track). For the “rap” portion in “Roll the Bones,” Rush showcased an in-concert video starring an all-star cast that included Tom Morello, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, actors Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Peter Dinklage and Primus bassist Les Claypool.
R40 Live‘s cover, featuring a rare picture of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson standing atop Neil Peart’s drum kit riser, was photographed by former major league baseball player and five-time Cy Young winner Randy Johnson, who has segued into concert photography following his 2009 retirement. “As a friend and fan of Rush, and the passion I have for photography to capture moments, it’s great that both can blend together in a lasting impression, here for the world to see,” Johnson said in a statement.
R40 Live will be available in a variety of formats ranging from the full 3CD/Blu-ray or DVD set to standalone options for the concert film or live album. Pre-order R40 Live over at Rush’s official store.
