Watch Sean Penn Talk El Chapo Interview in ’60 Minutes’ Clip
Sean Penn sat down with 60 Minutes’ Charlie Rose for the actor’s first interview about his encounter with El Chapo. The interview Penn conducted with the Mexican drug lord was released on Rolling Stone soon after El Chapo‘s capture.
Rose appeared on CBS This Morning to preview his Penn interview, which will air on Sunday’s 60 Minutes program as well as on his PBS show on Monday. Rose began by noting Penn’s response to the Mexican government’s claims that his interview helped lead to the capture of El Chapo. “Sean Penn believes claims of his contributions are incorrect and can put him in danger,” Rose said before footage of the interview was shown, where Penn continues to call the government’s claims a “myth.”
“We had met with him many weeks earlier on October 2nd in a place nowhere near where he was captured,” Penn explains before stating his believe that the government may feel “humiliated” that other people knew his whereabouts before they did. “We’re not smarter than the DEA or the Mexican Intelligence. We had a contact upon which we could facilitate an invitation.”
Rose then asks if Penn believes that the Mexican government not only wanted to see Penn blamed, but wonders if they intentionally put him at risk with the cartel. Penn affirmatively answers Rose’s question, though he does not feel fearful for his life and has not heard from anyone in the cartel.
Later, Penn discusses his original intention for the interview, which he had hoped would launch a conversation on the policy on the War on Drugs. “We all want this drug problem to stop,” Penn says. He notes that it’s an issue being ignored in discussion of the piece.
