Lorrie Morgan Readies New Album ‘Letting Go… Slow’
One of country music’s most versatile talents of the past three decades, Lorrie Morgan will kick off 2016 with Letting Go… Slow. Her first new solo album in five years, the LP is set for release February 12th on the Shanachie Entertainment label.
Born in Nashville to a Grand Ole Opry legend and an Opry member herself for more than 30 years, the daughter of George Morgan was one of country music’s biggest stars of the Nineties and scored three Number One songs. As at home with tear-stained ballads as she is upbeat material, Morgan’s new release combines original tunes (such as the witty highlight “Jesus and Hairspray”) with covers of country classics including Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billy Joe,” the Patsy Cline-popularized “Strange” and Vern Gosdin’s “Is It Raining At Your House.” Morgan also delivers an adventurous, reggae-tinged take on Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay.”
Making her Opry debut at 13 years old, Morgan was one of the venerable institution’s youngest members when she was inducted in 1984. Two years later, she married fellow country hitmaker Keith Whitley, who died of acute alcohol poisoning in May 1989. Beginning with that year’s “Dear Me” and Out of Your Shoes,” Morgan reached the Top Ten 14 times over the next eight years, scoring Number One hits with a trio of empowering tunes: “Five Minutes,” “What Part of No” and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.” The new LP closes with “How Does It Feel,” a tender ballad she co-wrote.
“I have been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a grandmother, a breadwinner, and, ultimately a survivor,” says Morgan, the mother of two who has made headlines for her six marriages as often as she has for her five decades in country music. “It seems, in many ways, I am a living, breathing country song, and I know what I sing.”
Morgan’s most recent album was 2013’s Dos Divas, a collaboration with another famed country-music daughter, Pam Tillis.
