Unbreakable Smile
A pop cheerleader who can't quite decide who she wants to be
Tori Kelly is a cross between Lea Michele on Glee and Ariana Grande in world-domination mode: a power singer torn between girl-with-a-guitar authenticity and diva-with-six-inch-heels ascension. Her debut is full of startlingly human pop — check “Talk,” with a shifting groove courtesy of Frank Ocean producer Malay, and “Expensive,” where Max Martin perfects the synthetic honking-sax soul he rolled out on Grande’s “Problem.” But only a choir geek will suffer through the self-empowerment lectures that surround the highs. Next time: less guitar, higher heels.
