See the ‘Community’ Cast Reluctantly Promote New Season
Community will make its grand return on March 17th, debuting on its new home, Yahoo! Screen, with two new episodes to kick off its highly anticipated sixth season (still no word on that movie). Yahoo will air 13 new episodes of the beloved cult comedy, with a new episode going live every Tuesday.
To break the news, the show’s cast and its creator, Dan Harmon, gathered for a characteristically hyper self-aware promo, in which they teased the show by, well, not teasing the show. “I don’t need to tell you who I am, or what I created, what I was fired from, rehired to,” Harmon said, hinting at the show’s tumultuous history while its logo flashed like subliminal message.
Later Alison Brie and Gillian Jacobs questioned the point of even telling fans when, where or how Community would air, while Joel McHale “teased” the show’s stacked lineup of “all-star guests” including Keanu Reeves, Matthew McConaughey, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, dinosaurs, unicorns and even gargoyles.
“The show is there, it’s brand new and we need you to watch,” McHale says at the end, before quickly qualifying: “Well, we don’t need you to watch. You get to watch. It’s a privilege.”
Yahoo! Screen resurrected Community last summer after the show wrapped up a rocky five-season run on NBC. Although the quirky college comedy was a hit with critics and maintained a rabid fan base, it was beleaguered by poor ratings, and Harmon often found himself feuding with former cast member Chevy Chase (who left the show in 2012) and NBC, who temporarily replaced him as showrunner during Season Four before rehiring him for Season Five.
Along with Chase, Community has seen several other cast members depart, including Donald Glover and, most recent, Yvette Nicole Brown. The show’s sixth season will, however, feature two new faces: Keith David (Crash) and Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds)
