My Morning Jacket Preview New Songs in Trippy Trailer
My Morning Jacket have shared a trippy, oceanic trailer for their seventh studio album, The Waterfall. The two-minute clip, available above, shows the veteran rock quintet recording the 10-track LP at the idyllic Panoramic House studio at Northern California’s Stinson Beach. “We hope you enjoy this peek under the waterfall,” the band said in a statement to fans.
The clip features snippets of five new tracks – “Spring (Among the Living),” majestic lead single “Big Decisions,” spacey soul-pop standout “Compound Fracture,” epic opener “Believe (Nobody Knows)” and country-folk ballad “Get the Point” – and ends with a long pan over the album’s eye-popping cover art.
The band – singer-guitarist Jim James, guitarist Carl Broemel, bassist Tom Blankenship, keyboardist Bo Koster and drummer Patrick Hallahan – announced The Waterfall earlier this month, detailing the track list and revealing a crop of 2015 tour dates. “For me, every record has the spirit of where we made it,” James said in a statement. “Stinson Beach was so psychedelic and focused. It was almost like we lived on our own little moon out there. It feels like you’re up in the sky.” The album is now available for pre-order.
As the frontman told Rolling Stone in December, My Morning Jacket entered the studio with a more spontaneous approach toward song construction. They ended up compiling 24 tracks, which they split into two stand-alone LPs (with the other due out in 2016). “It’s a puzzle right up until the last second,” James said of the sequencing. “It’s like playing Jenga.”
Even the trailer’s brief teasers showcase the album’s eclecticism. And, as Hallahan noted in a statement, that diversity is an extension of the band’s open-mindedness. “The freedom we went into this record with took a lot of the pressure off, as far as what to do and how to do it,” he said. “The mantra was anything goes, no stone unturned, it’ll be done when it’s done.”
