Watch Pharrell, Fallon Form R&B Duo ‘Afro & Deziak’
One night after singing Bob Dylan lullabies with Ethan Hawke, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon was back in a musical mood with guest Pharrell Williams as the two unearthed footage of their long-forgotten (fictional) R&B duo Afro & Deziak. “They were the best. They used to sing all those crazy love songs but people never really got on board with them,” Fallon reminisces.
In a series of clips from the Soul Train-inspired American Power Hour, Williams’ Afro & Fallon’s Deziak – who attempts to keep control of the world’s worst taped-on moustache – perform three tracks, “Girl I’m Gonna Get You in the Mood,” “Girl I’m Gonna Give You What I Got” and simply “Girl.” Each soulful song asks the titular girl increasingly bizarre favors in the lead-up to lovemaking.
“Before we get undressed / We have just one request / Girl, plan a baby shower for my boss’ daughter,” the duo sing, while “Girl” asks “Girl let’s go camping with my uncle / Girl can you take a drug test for me? / Girl, can you and your friends carry a foosball table up six flights of stairs into my buddy’s apartment?” This actually isn’t the first time American Power Hour footage from Fallon’s past has come back to haunt the late-night host: Earlier this year, Fallon and Don Cheadle teamed up for the duo Pleather & Jerry.
While Pharrell was in New York, the ageless “Happy” singer dropped by Madame Tussauds in Times Square to unveil his startlingly precise new wax doppelgänger, which dons the red Adidas jacket and “Buffalo Girls” brown hat that Pharrell wore to the 2014 Grammys.
