Watch Chvrches’ Dark, Minimal Video for ‘Leave a Trace’
Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry gets theatrical in the band’s new video for “Leave a Trace,” as the vocalist sings in front of dramatically angled mirrors, strolls against backdrops of strobe lights and stormy skies and wades in shallow water. “You think I’ll apologize for things I left behind,” Mayberry croons over her bandmates’ pulsating synths. “But you got it wrong / And I’m as sane as I ever was.”
In July, the Glasglow synth-pop trio – Mayberry, Iain Cook, Martin Doherty – released the single and announced their second LP, Every Open Eye, out September 25th via Glassnote Records. Last week, the band shared a lyric video for their resilient new track “Never Ending Circles,” which finds Mayberry celebrating independence over glossy synthesizers and bright drum machines.
In related news, Mayberry responded on Monday to misogynistic comments made about the “Leave a Trace” video in the Internet forum 4chan, Stereogum reports. “Dear anyone who thinks misogyny isn’t real. It is and this is what it looks like,” the singer tweeted in reply to a message directing her to the thread.
Every Open Eye follows the Scottish group’s debut LP, 2013’s The Bones of What You Believe, which reached Number 12 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. That acclaimed album ranked Number Seven on Rolling Stone‘s list of the year’s 20 Best Debuts and earned the Number 32 spot on our round-up of 2013’s 50 Best Albums.
Chvrches have festival and stand-alone dates scheduled throughout the summer and fall. The band’s next gig is August 21st at Belgium’s Pukkelpop Festival, and further European shows are scheduled for November. The trio will kick off their North American leg on September 26th at the Boston Calling Music Festival, running until their November spot at the Fun Fun Fun Festival in Austin, Texas.
