Watch Blake Shelton and Ashley Monroe’s Seductive ‘Lonely Tonight’ Video
Sometimes the most populated cities are the loneliest places.
Blake Shelton chose his temporary home of Los Angeles, where he films The Voice, to be the backdrop for his brand-new “Lonely Tonight” video, featuring Ashley Monroe. The two powerhouse vocalists harmonize on the song about a booty call between former lovers, but never share the screen until the last few seconds, during which you can chalk up their sexual chemistry to good acting.
“He’s like a brother,” Monroe tells Rolling Stone Country. “He’s one of my best friends. We just sing and look at each other and are like, ‘Ah, I know you!'”
Monroe might as well be family in the Shelton-Miranda Lambert household. She was one third of Pistol Annies alongside Lambert and Angaleena Presley, and recruited Shelton for a duet on her debut solo album — the hilarious “You Ain’t Dolly (And You Ain’t Porter),” which Monroe wrote with Vince Gill.
“Lonely Tonight,” penned by Brent Anderson and Ryan Hurd, is the second single off Shelton’s Bringing Back the Sunshine album. The LP’s first radio release, “Neon Light,” marked the Oklahoma native’s 13th straight Number One single — the most consecutive chart-toppers in Billboard and Mediabase country chart history. Shelton’s latest album, released in September, is reminiscent of his earlier catalog,
“The whole album is searching for parts of me that I think have… not gotten lost along the way, but stuff that I haven’t addressed in my music as much as I used to, whether it’s drinking songs, heartbreak songs or songs about how people treat you,” the country superstar tells Rolling Stone Country. “My last couple of albums have been so positive, because when I made them I was just getting married. It’s been in this awesome place…. But after a while, as a country singer, I gotta get back to singing about getting drunk because there’s people out there — and I’ve been one of them — that have had their heart broken, or they’ve had a tough day at work, or they get stabbed in the back.”
Bringing Back the Sunshine is Shelton’s ninth studio album. Monroe is now putting the finishing touches on her second solo project, produced by Gill with Justin Niebank.
