Watch Spoon’s Hypnotic, Slow-Moving Video for ‘Inside Out’
“Time’s gone inside out / Time gets distorted,” Spoon frontman Britt Daniel sings on the band’s hypnotic single “Inside Out.” That lyric is the theme of the track’s slow-motion video, which finds Daniel mysteriously appearing in a montage of surreal scenes – from a masked robber getaway drive to a brawl at an elderly person’s birthday party to a sexual encounter in a motel room. The dreamlike imagery fits well with the song’s crawling bass-drums groove and shimmering harps.
The clip was directed by LeBlanc + Cudmore, who have previously created eye-popping visuals for bands like the New Pornographers, Belle and Sebastian, Alt-J and Fucked Up.
“Inside Out” is the third single from Spoon‘s eighth studio album, They Want My Soul, following the garage rock-leaning “Rent I Pay” and power-pop stand-out “Do You.” In December, the indie rockers began road-testing a dramatic new track, “Satellite,” which finds Daniel singing, “When you’re feeling lonely, I’m your satellite” over dreamy keyboards and stabbing guitars.
The band hasn’t shared plans for a follow-up album, but recent comments suggest another delay – though maybe not as lengthy as the gap separating Soul and 2010’s Transference.
“It’s hard to say,” drummer-producer Jim Eno told Billboard last September, commenting on the timeline for their next LP. “I’m sure Britt and Alex [Fischel] will do another Divine Fits record. If that happens, we’re probably not going to do another Spoon record for two years, but we’ll see how it goes.”
Meanwhile, Spoon have a busy summer tour schedule up ahead, including stops at Sasquatch! and the inaugural Eaux Claires Festival curated by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.
