Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea Have Campy Fun in ‘Pretty Girls’ Video
The unlikely pairing of Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea becomes otherworldly in the new video for their song “Pretty Girls.” Azalea co-directed the song’s visuals alongside Cameron Duddy, who has helmed many of Bruno Mars’ clips.
In the campy video, Spears primps herself poolside when an alien (Azaela) suddenly falls from the sky. The pop singer is in her silliest form, playfully singing the track’s lyrics and giving Azalea’s alien character a Valley Girls makeover. Azalea’s imitation of an alien imitating a stereotypical California accent falls flat, but the clip is reminiscent of some of Spears’ best videos, including “(You Drive Me) Crazy” and “Oops!… I Did It Again.”
The video borrows inspiration from the 1988 film Earth Girls Are Easy, even going so far as recreating the film’s soundtrack cover for the single’s artwork. Azalea had teased the video’s film reference when she told USA Today that she modeled her style for the visuals after the movie’s star Geena Davis.
Azalea confirmed to MTV that “Pretty Girls” will be on a forthcoming album from Spears, though the singer has yet to give any more details on what would be her first LP since 2013’s Britney Jean. The pair will perform the single together live at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards this Sunday.
Since Britney Jean‘s release, Spears has been headlining a show in Las Vegas titled Britney: Piece of Me at Planet Hollywood. Last fall, she renewed her contract for an additional two years at the venue. While she keeps quiet on her own new music, she will appear on disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder‘s first album in 30 years, singing a club-friendly cover of Suzanne Vega’s 1987 hit “Tom’s Diner.”
