Tribeca: Courtney Love Talks Cobain, George Lucas Discusses ‘Star Wars’
The Tribeca Film Festival will feature a series of “Tribeca Talks” next month, pairing George Lucas with Stephen Colbert to discuss the Star Wars creator’s career and, separately, Courtney Love with Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck documentarian Brett Morgan and journalist Neil Strauss to discuss the Nirvana frontman. Directors Christopher Nolan and Gus Van Zant, comedian Janeane Garofalo, and producer Harvey Weinstein are among the others who will participate in the events, which run concurrent with the festival between April 15th and April 26th.
The director-focused talks will kick off with Lucas and Colbert’s conversation on April 17th. Also on the lineup: Nolan’s chat with Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller on April 20th; True Detective helmsman Cary Fukunaga will discuss his works with producer James Schamus on April 23rd; and director Brad Bird (Ratatouille, Iron Giant) and Garofalo will talk shop on April 24th.
A series of post-film discussions will include Love’s meeting with Morgen and Strauss on the 19th, a chat with Amy Schumer of Inside Amy Schumer on the same day and a roundtable of to-be-announced comedians led by Kevin Pollak to follow Misery Loves Company on the 22nd, among others. Also, Gus Van Zant will speak with yet-to-be announced guests following a screening of Good Will Hunting on the 22nd.
Finally, movie mogul Weinstein will discuss his career on the 18th.
The festival has also announced screenings of four new documentaries this year, following the news of a new Monty Python doc (and attendant screenings of the pioneering British comedy troupe’s movies). The Cobain doc Montage of Heck will get its New York City premiere at the festival, as will Kevin Pollak’s Misery Loves Comedy, which features the likes of Garofalo, Kevin Smith, Martin Short, Jon Favreau, Jimmy Fallon and many others answering the question, “Do you have to be miserable to be funny?” The fest will also offer the world premieres of Code: Debugging the Gender Gap, about gender disparity in software engineering, and The Diplomat, about Ambassador Richard Holbrooke’s foreign policy work from Vietnam to Afghanistan. The festival will also give premieres to new episodes of Inside Amy Shumer and Netflix’s Chef’s Table.
