New ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Trailer Plays Up Gritty Tension
“Sometimes your worst self is your best self,” Vince Vaughn says at the start of a new, minute-long True Detective second season trailer. It’s the sort of “time is a flat circle” head-scratcher – though maybe not quite as profound – that made the first season of the series compulsory viewing.
The rest of the clip shows him with a crew investigating what looks like an apartment complex for reasons that have yet to be revealed, and a close-up on Colin Farrell’s bloody knuckles, as a voiceover recites another perfectly True Detective one-liner: “My strong suspicion is we got the world we deserve.” Rachel McAdams enters a dark room holding a gun and, in a separate scene, plays with a knife, as her voice explains that a girl has gone missing but nobody seems to care. There are scenes of fire, men showing scars and physical assaults as a noisy soundtrack crescendos to a loud boom. Everything about the clip – which follows up another equally riveting teaser – seems designed to tease what will likely some very tense viewing, beginning on June 21st.
McAdams, in particular, has said she’s stoked to play a grittier role than usual, playing a Ventura County Sheriff. “She doesn’t really care what everyone thinks; she feels no responsibility for other people’s feelings,” she recently told Marie Claire. “She’s not trying to be charming, which isn’t always the case with a leading lady…. Not that you want to be a horrendous character, just a little more human.”
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote all eight episodes of the second season, which will be set this time in Los Angeles. Farrell will play detective Ray Velcoro, alongside Taylor Kitsch, who will play a California Highway Patrolman. Vaughn is slated to portray a career criminal caught in the middle, as the officers entangle themselves in a very tense murder investigation.
