Jay Z Practices for Carnegie Hall in ‘Glory’ Video
Always willing to go as big as possible, Jay Z surrounds himself with a full orchestra for the new video for “Glory,” the 2012 track he penned and released after the birth of his and Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy. The video is available to watch on Tidal.
The “Glory” clip toes the line between simple and grandiose, comprising footage filmed before Jay Z’s charity concert at Carnegie Hall in 2012. Befitting the adage about how one gets to Carnegie Hall, the clip primarily finds Jay practicing alongside the orchestra, casually spitting his heartwarming ode to baby Blue while lounging on a couch.
Later, as the Neptunes-produced beat plays out, the video shows the moments before the concert begins: Alicia Keys, Nas, Questlove and more mill about, and Hov leads his group through a quick prayer before stepping on to one of the most significant stages into the world.
Jay released the “Glory” video exclusively on Tidal, the music streaming service he recently relaunched alongside a number of music’s biggest names, including Madonna, Kanye West, Rihanna, Jack White and Arcade Fire. Along with offering subscribers high-quality audio, Tidal promised it would feature “exclusive experiences,” and has so far delivered treats like Beyoncé’s “Die With You,” a previously unreleased piano ballad, and the video for Rihanna’s “American Oxygen.”
In an attempt to further separate Tidal from the growing pack of high-def streaming services — such as Spotify Premium, Deezer Elite and the soon-to-be relaunched Beats — Jay Z and Co. touted that the founding owners all had an equal stake in its equity and their goal was to provide artists with more money, even if that meant taking a hit on their bottom line.
