Watch Stephen Colbert Mock Dissenting Supreme Court Justices
Stephen Colbert may have departed The Colbert Report, but his sharp satirical wit on the subject of current events remains as vital and inimitable as ever. In a video posted on the relatively new Last Show With Stephen Colbert YouTube page, David Letterman’s successor talks about the Supreme Court’s historic decision regarding marriage equality. “I’m here to say ‘Congratulations gays,’ you now have the right to marry in all 50 states,” Colbert says. “So if you’re a homosexual and living in North Dakota, all your problems are solved.”
In the video titled “June Is a Lovely Time for a Wedding,” Colbert runs through the many pros and few cons regarding marriage equality. “Of course not everyone is celebrating,” Colbert says. “My condolences to gays with commitment issues who are asking their partner ‘if we can please talk about this when I get home from work today.’ Also unhappy: Four of the nine Supreme Court justices.”
Colbert then takes aim at those dissenting judges, particularly Chief Justice John Roberts and longest-serving justice Antonin Scalia, who the Late Show host paints as a cantankerous, out-of-touch old man. “Scalia also took issue with the majority’s view that marriage is about free expression, grumbling ‘Expression, sure enough, is a freedom, but anyone in a long-lasting marriage will attest that that happy state constricts, rather than expands, what one can prudently say,'” Colbert says, reading the Supreme Court decision. “Which is both a fiery dissent and the world’s longest Lockhorns comic.”
Colbert, who will make his Late Show debut on September 8th, sums up his video by saying, “It’s a historic day for gay people of all stripes, not that all gay people have stripes, I just know it’s a popular motif this time of year,” and wishing his viewers a happy Pride Weekend.
