Bjork Previews MoMA Exhibition With Visually Stunning ‘Black Lake’ Trailer
Björk is much more than a musician – she’s also an innovator in performance art, film, fashion, visual art and instrument design. All of those talents will be recognized with the retrospective exhibition Björk, which will run from March 8th to June 7th at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In the meantime, the multi-talented artist has shared a vivid trailer for the exhibit’s centerpiece, Black Lake, an “immersive 10-minute music and film experience” inspired by a track from her new album, Vulnicura.
Black Lake is a collaboration with 3D design firm Autodesk and director Andrew Thomas Huang, who previously worked with the singer-songwriter on her video for “Mutual Core.” Björk will display the musician’s collaborations with video directors, photographers, fashion designers and other artists; it will also be presented with a part-fictional, part-biographical narrative – co-authored by Björk and Icelandic writer Sjón Sigurdsson – that traces the two decades since the release of her first solo album, 1993’s Debut.
Only 100 visitors are allowed to enter the exhibit at one time, wearing headphones as they walk through rooms focused on each of her solo LPs. The exhibit will include era-specific costumes and videos, along with audio commentary from Sigurdsson, director-actress Margrét Vilhjálmsdóttir and Björk herself, who described the experience as a “cacophony of sound.” More details are available at the MoMA website.
Björk surprise-released Vulnicura, her ninth studio album, January 20th on iTunes – just one week after announcing it. The singer was forced to rush-release the album two months ahead of its original March release date following its early Internet leak. The LP’s emotional material was inspired by her separation with longtime romantic partner Matthew Barney. “Usually, I don’t really talk about my private life, but with this album there’s no two ways about what it is,” she recently told The New York Times. “I separated during this album, ended a 13-year relationship, and it’s probably the toughest thing I’ve done.”
The musician will kick off a brief run of intermittent New York City live dates on March 7th, one day prior to the opening of her MoMA exhibition.
