Watch A$AP Ferg Teach Haim, Cara Delevingne How to ‘Dope Walk’
On one of the stand-out tracks from last fall’s Ferg Forever mixtape, New York rapper A$AP Ferg coined a new dance: the dope walk, a loose stut that he describes as “hotter than Cara Delevingne’s.” The song’s guerilla music video puts that to test, bringing the move to New York Fashion Week and introducing it to artists like Haim and Jeremy Scott. The footage was shot entirely via iPhone, then edited into a Facetime transmission that we see Delevingne watching while on vacation.
“With ‘Dope Walk’ I wanted to bring back kids dancing and having fun again,” says Ferg. “That’s how it used to be in Harlem. I remember everybody Harlem-shaking and ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’-ing. Those were some of the most fun and memorable times in my life.”
The song’s producer, Stelios Phili, had his own intentions. “To create the ‘Dope Walk’ beat, I tried to imagine what it would sound like if N.E.R.D. made ratchet R&B music with Lars Ulrich as the drummer,” he says. “It’s a combination of things that should never go together – and I knew Ferg would have no problem with that. He’s a master at flowing over crazy-ass sounds.”
The “Dope Walk” video was shot by Ferg and Matt Starr at presentations by Scott, Adidas x Kanye, Adam Selman, Pyer Moss and Moncler. It also includes cameos from Kanye, Diddy, Alexander Wang, Russell Simmons, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Nast, Travis Scott, Big Sean, Virgil Abloh and Kris Jenner.
