My Morning Jacket Detail New Album ‘The Waterfall,’ Plot U.S. Tour
My Morning Jacket will release their seventh studio album, The Waterfall, on May 4th via ATO/Capitol Records. The 10-track LP, the band’s Capitol debut, is their first since 2011’s Circuital. The Louisville, Kentucky-based quintet have shared The Waterfall‘s track list, cover art and lead single, the propulsive “Big Decisions.” Fans who pre-order the album – available at the band’s website, iTunes and Amazon – will receive an instant download of the track.
The Waterfall was recorded primarily at the idyllic Panoramic House studio at Northern California’s Stinson Beach starting in late 2013. In a statement, frontman Jim James says he was inspired by the environment’s natural beauty. “For me, every record has the spirit of where we made it,” James said. “Stinson Beach was so psychedelic and focused. It was almost like we lived on our own little moon out there. It feels like you’re up in the sky.”
My Morning Jacket – James, guitarist Carl Broemel, bassist Tom Blankenship, keyboardist Bo Koster and drummer Patrick Hallahan – recorded The Waterfall with producer-engineer Tucker Martine (the Decemberists, Modest Mouse), who previously led the sessions for Circuital. In addition to Stinson Beach, the band worked at Martine’s Portland studio, Flora, and La La Land studio in Louisville.
As James told Rolling Stone in December, the band entered the studio with a more spontaneous approach to recording. “I tried to give the guys a real quick demo so they can come in with a basic understanding of the melody or what I was hoping to go for,” the frontman said. “But we had a really fun way of working where there’s no rehearsal period and we could jump in and just start rolling tape.” They ended up with 24 tracks, which they split into a pair of stand-alone albums (with the other due out in 2016). “It’s a puzzle right up until the last second,” James said of the sequencing. “It’s like playing Jenga.”
The Waterfall finds the band veering from country-tinged folk (“Get the Point”) to spacey soul-pop (“Compound Fracture”) to heavy, majestic rock (“Big Decisions”). “The freedom we went into this record with took a lot of the pressure off, as far as what to do and how to do it,” Hallahan says. “The mantra was anything goes, no stone unturned, it’ll be done when it’s done.”
