‘Avengers’ Meet James Spader-Voiced Evil Robot in New Trailer
Besting Loki and that crazy Chitauri mothership was no easy feat for the Avengers in their 2012 debut, but the cadre of Marvel heroes will certainly have their work cut out for them in the upcoming sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. As a new trailer shows, this time their biggest enemy is of their own creation: Ultron (voiced by James Spader), a robot created by Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) to help keep peace after S.H.I.E.L.D. is destroyed and the Avengers temporarily disband.
But despite Stark’s best efforts, his plan backfires epically. A string of ominous quotes — “Everyone creates the thing they dread”; “No matter who wins or loses, trouble always comes around”; “We have no place in the world” — over an equally ominous piano melody set the trailer’s tone, as Stark reveals Ultron to the Avengers, but his creation quickly begins to wreak absolute havoc.
The myriad explosions in Ultron’s wake, the way he grabs Captain America (Chris Evans) by the throat and his charming promise, “I’m gonna tear you apart from the inside,” are proof enough this robot’s got the necessary “Big Bad” credentials. But even more daunting than his ability to destroy is Ultron’s knack for getting under the Avengers’ skin. Not only does Thor go after Stark at one point, but the trailer ends with a vicious fight between an out-of-control Hulk and Iron Man in “Hulkbuster” armor.
This marks the second trailer for Age of Ultron, following a clip released last October, which also included the first look at two new Avengers: Quicksilver, the lightning fast son of Magneto played by actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his twin sister the Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olson. Fans, however, will have to keep waiting for a full appearance from Vision, played by Paul Bettany (who also voices Stark’s A.I. companion, J.A.R.V.I.S.)
The Avengers: Age of Ultron was written and directed by Joss Whedon. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on May 1st.
