Marilyn Manson Performs ‘The Beautiful People’ With Teenage Metal Band
The hard-rocking boys of Unlocking the Truth weren’t born when Marilyn Manson scared the pants off of America with “The Beautiful People.” But metal cares not for age discrepancies, as the young Brooklyn trio proved when they joined Manson onstage for a vicious performance of the 1996 cut during a recent show in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (via Consequence of Sound).
A fan-shot video captured the performance, showing Unlocking the Truth’s Malcolm Brickhouse, Alec Atkins and Jarad Dawkins assisting Manson on vocal duties. The trio hold their own, matching the Nineties goth overlord howl for howl, and headbang for headbang. Brickhouse fittingly closed out the group’s cameo by stage-diving into the crowd.
Unlocking the Truth opened a handful of gigs for Manson at the outset of his current tour in support of his latest LP, The Pale Emperor. Though entering middle age, the 46-year-old rocker recently told Rolling Stone he still sees himself as a teenager, a quality he shares with friend Johnny Depp.
“We like to consider ourselves 12th-graders, the guys with more experience than the ninth-graders, the ones that the girls want to fuck,” Manson said. “I mean, time and age are really irrelevant to me. Johnny is the same way. Sometimes, I think I’m trapped in the age that I started this. I’m trapped at 23.”
That might explain why the rocker felt compelled to team up with Unlocking the Truth, whose members are all younger than 14. The metal outfit made a splash last year when they inked a five-album, $1.8 million record deal with Sony. The group rose to prominence thanks to a number of viral videos, including a clip of them playing their track “Monsters” on a Times Square street corner. The group is prepping for the release of their debut EP, which is available to pre-order, and have a handful of gigs lined up, including sets at SXSW and Bonnaroo.
