Watch Janelle Monae Achieve ‘Yoga’ Nirvana in New Video
Janelle Monae brings the club to the yoga studio with the music video for “Yoga,” her new collaboration with labelmate Jidenna. The psychedelic R&B singer struts around in a crown and yoga pants, performing choreographed moves with a crew of backing dancers – before achieving nirvana and levitating off the mat.
“Baby, bend over / Let your booty do that yoga,” Monae sings on the sparse electro-soul track. The song will be featured on the upcoming label compilation EP Wondaland Presents: The Eephus, due out this summer. “She did that yoga / Looking for my loafers man, I woke up in a toga,” Jidenna adds in his breezy verse.
“Yoga” is Monae’s first new release since her second LP, 2013’s The Electric Lady. The five-track Eephus EP will feature songs from other acts on the Wondaland roster, including St. Beauty, Deep Cotton and Roman GianArthur. The latter musician guests on Jidenna’s single “Classic Man,” which will be included on Eephus.
Wondaland struck a deal with L.A. Reid and Epic Records earlier this year after being courted by several labels. “It’s not just one type of artist, but there’s a connective tissue,” Mikael Moore, Wondaland head and Monae’s manager, told Billboard of the group. “It’s about the collective rather than individuals — Janelle is the proprietor, but they’re partners with her.”
“The collective talent of the Wondaland artists is awe-inspiring,” Reid said in a statement for Epic. “I haven’t personally witnessed a collective that sounds and looks this special in quite a while. I’ve been a longtime supporter and friend of Janelle and it is an honor to now work with her as a visionary businesswoman who brings an all-star group of talented performers to the table.”
