Libertines Announce Comeback LP ‘Anthems for Doomed Youth’
It’s been 11 years since the Libertines last released a studio album, but the British rock group led by singer Carl Barat and guitarist Pete Doherty will finally return with new music September 4th when they release their new LP Anthems for Doomed Youth. After nearly a decade-long hiatus fueled by infighting and Doherty’s rampant drug use, Barat and Doherty – along with drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassall – reunited in 2014. The first single off the band’s third album – they previously recorded their 2002 breakthrough debut Up the Bracket and its follow-up, 2004’s The Libertines – will debut Thursday on the BBC.
The 12-song Anthems for Doomed Youth features the band’s recently unveiled track “Gunga Din,” which the Libertines performed for the first time June 20th during their performance at the Netherlands’ Best Kept Secret Festival.
The album, which will be released via Harvest Records, will be made available for pre-order in the U.S. on July 24th. Additionally, the deluxe version of Anthems for Doomed Youth will house four new bonus tracks that were recorded live at Thailand’s Karma Sound Studios in May.
Last year, Rolling Stone spoke to the then-recently reformed Libertines about their new music. “They’re as melodic as ever – bouncy and buoyant, but with those ever-present doom-laden undertones,” Doherty said. “You know what we’re like. We’re all over the place, we’re a mess, but we’ve got a few things going for us – and that is these melodies that weave our fucking songs together.”
