Muse Announce New Album ‘Drones’ for June Release
English arena-rock stars Muse announced the upcoming release of their new album Drones on June 9th – their first full-length since 2012’s The 2nd Law. Though frontman Matt Bellamy hinted that a new and “heavy” record was in the works in an impromptu Twitter Q+A last July, little was known about the new album until Wednesday’s announcement.
Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out more: Muse will release an album track, “Psycho,” on their official YouTube page tomorrow, March 12th, at 6:00pm GMT. The song will then become available to download the same day, following a pre-order of the record.
“To me, ‘Drones’ are metaphorical psychopaths which enable psychopathic behavior with no recourse,” Bellamy explained in a statement, seemingly teasing a conceptual album. “The world is run by Drones utilizing Drones to turn us all into Drones. Drones explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors.”
The album’s first official single, “Dead Inside,” will debut later this month, at the end of a string of six small-venue UK tour dates. Tickets for the surprise tour go on sale tomorrow, though a world tour will likely follow.
“I have this strong feeling that the next album should be something that really does strip away the additional things that we’ve experimented with on the last two albums,” Bellamy told Rolling Stone in 2013. “It will be nice to reconnect and remind ourselves of just the basics of who we are.”
