Douglas Durst ‘Very Grateful’ For ‘The Jinx,’ Robert Durst’s Arrest
While Douglas Durst, the younger brother of alleged murderer Robert Durst, may have refused to cooperate with The Jinx, he admits that he is “very grateful” for the HBO miniseries since it resulted in the arrest of his brother. In an interview with the New York Times, Douglas’ first since the series concluded with Robert’s shocking confession and subsequent arrest earlier this month, the New York real estate scion reveals that he believes his brother was stalking him with the intention of murder as recently as February.
According to Douglas, Robert was seen roughly 10 miles north of Douglas’ Palm Beach County, Florida home on February 22nd. “We had information that Bob was five or 10 minutes away from my house in Florida,” Douglas Durst told the Times. “We had to have security staying in the house.”
Robert and Douglas’ vicious sibling rivalry was highlighted in The Jinx, with Douglas getting a restraining order against his brother after Robert showed up uninvited – and in some cases, armed – at properties belonging to Douglas. Recently, Robert even started showing a “fixation” towards Douglas’ daughter Anita Durst, as Robert would randomly show up at arts events his niece was coordinating.
Douglas added that there’s “a tremendous sense of relief” since his brother was arrested in New Orleans for charges stemming from the murder of Robert’s friend Susan Berman in 2000 (plus additional drugs and weapons charges from the arrest itself). “I no longer am looking over my shoulder. I’m very grateful to The Jinx for having brought this about,” Douglas said.
As for insinuations that Douglas helped cover up the still-unsolved disappearance of Robert’s first wife Kathleen, Douglas reiterated that he had no communication with Robert’s lawyer Nicholas Scoppetta, who The Jinx accuses of spreading misinformation regarding the disappearance. Scoppetta also told the Times that he doesn’t remember any conversations with Douglas Durst.
