Watch the Eye-Popping Trailer for Tim Burton’s ‘Big Eyes’
UPDATE: Lana Del Rey has shared a 60-second lyric video teaser for “Big Eyes,” the title track from Tim Burton‘s upcoming film.
Tim Burton‘s upcoming drama, Big Eyes, now has an eye-popping debut trailer. The film, out on Christmas Day, tells the true story of Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose striking portraits of children with massive eyes became a sensation in the Fifties and Sixties – though her husband, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), took all the credit for her work, claiming no one would buy art created by a woman.
The trailer, released by The Weinstein Company, establishes the film’s engaging arc – from Margaret’s early development as a painter to her husband’s marketing ruse to the eventual legal battle that resulted from that exploitation. Burton, known primarily for his gothic-tinged work in fantasy and horror, is navigating more traditional period-drama waters with Big Eyes. But a few fleeting moments in the trailer – like Margaret seeing real-life humans with surreally enormous eyes – suggest the director hasn’t totally downplayed his visual expansiveness.
The Big Eyes cast is rounded out by Danny Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Krysten Ritter and Terence Stamp. It’s Burton’s first live-action film since the 2012 horror-comedy Dark Shadows, which starred his frequent collaborator Johnny Depp and earned mixed reviews.
In other Burton news, rumors continue to swirl about a possible sequel to the filmmaker’s 1988 classic, Beetlejuice. Back in February, Beetlejuice himself, Michael Keaton, told MTV that the project is inching closer toward reality.
“I’ve emailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff until relatively recently,” Keaton said. “I always said that [Beetlejuice] is the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another. Now it looks like he is involved. And without giving too much away, we’ve talked to each other, and emailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.”
