Watch Martin Gore’s Animated Video for ‘Europa Hymn’
Earlier this month, Depeche Mode founder Martin Gore announced plans to release a new self-titled solo LP under the moniker MG. The album, which features 16 electronic instrumental tracks, was written, recorded and produced by Gore after Depeche Mode wrapped up their 2013 tour. Gore previously offered up MG‘s first single “Europa Hymn,” and now he’s revealed the track’s music video, featuring an animated journey through the wiring of a recording console and a keyboard.
The “Europa Hymn” video was created by the London collective M-I-E and synchronizes perfectly with the atmospheric, synth-heavy single. “I wanted to keep the music very electronic, very filmic and give it an almost sci-fi-like quality,” Gore said of MG in a statement. “Music is a necessity for me. I go into the studio at least five days a week, every week, so once I had the idea and the template, the process was quick and fun.” MG arrives April 28th through Mute.
MG is Gore’s first true solo album since 2003’s Counterfeit². Although Gore is Depeche Mode’s main songwriter and lyricist, he opted to keep words out of his latest project because “the power of pure music and the emotions that can be created by musical atmospheres” conveyed what he was attempting to express with the MG tracks.
Gore spoke to Rolling Stone about Depeche Mode’s seventh album Violator, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. “During that time in our career, we were quite experimental in our choices of recording locations, and we loved the idea of going off and making each album an adventure,” Gore said of the LP that featured hits “Personal Jesus” and “Enjoy the Silence.” The guitarist also called Violator “the pinnacle of us having fun.”
