‘Jimi: All Is by My Side’: Photos From the Set of the Hendrix Biopic
John Ridley earned his first Academy Award this year for his 12 Years a Slave screenplay, and now he's in the director's chair for Jimi: All Is by My Side, a biopic tracing a year in the life of Jimi Hendrix with Outkast's André Benjamin in the title role. Scenes take place everywhere from New York's barely remembered Cheetah Club to the famous Monterey Pop Festival, and the film will receive a limited release on September 26th. Here, one month early, take a look at shots from the set — photos featuring not just Benjamin as Hendrix but Imogen Poots as Linda Keith, Hayley Atwell as Kathy Etchingham and Ruth Negga as Ida.

Jimi and Kathy
Hayley Atwell (left) plays DJ and girlfriend Kathy Etchingham. Here, she strolls down the street with Benjamin's Jimi.

Hey Jim
As Hendrix, Benjamin sits down to be interviewed – presumably not for radio.
-
Foxey Lady
Ethiopian-born, Dublin-raised actress Ruth Negga plays Ida, Hendrix's girlfriend after Etchingham.
-
Little Ring
Playing Linda Keith, another Hendrix girlfriend, Imogen Poots makes a phone call, no minor task in an apartment without end tables.
-
The Band Jimi
Benjamin's Hendrix jams with the Experience. Oliver Bennett plays Noel Redding and Tom Dunlea plays Mitch Mitchell.

Close Up
Atwell's Etchingham in conversation. The frizzy hair in the top right corner most likely belongs to Hendrix.

Gypsy Eyes
Atwell's Etchingham answers the phone. The inspiration for songs like "Foxey Lady" and "The Wind Cries Mary," she later documented her life in the late-Sixties in memoir Through Gypsy Eyes.

Hendrix and Keith
Benjamin's Hendrix has a laugh with Poots' Keith. In Keith Richards' autobiography, he claims that she was the inspiration for "Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones.

So Fresh, So Clean
Hendrix, looking like he just got out of marching band practice, leers across the bar.
