Alabama Shakes ‘Don’t Wanna Fight’ on New Single
Alabama Shakes have no use for violence on “Don’t Wanna Fight,” but the first single off the group’s new album Sound & Color, out April 21st via ATO, is a knockout blow anyway.
The chunky, funky soul cut arrives with an animated clip featuring stark, simple line drawings moving and shaking to the song’s punch-drunk groove. After reintroducing herself with a spine-tingling squeal, singer-guitarist Brittany Howard goes on to deliver a dizzying vocal performance that splits the difference between James Brown and Barry Gibb.
Sound & Color follows the Alabama Shakes’ 2012 breakout LP Boys & Girls and was recorded at the Sound Emporium in Nashville. The band co-produced the album with budding songwriter, guitarist and producer Blake Mills (Sky Ferreira, Sara Watkins).
“We took our time to write this record, and I’m really glad we did,” Howard said in a statement. “We were able to sit down and think about what’s exciting to us. This record is full of genre-bending songs.”
Sound & Color is currently available for pre-order on iTunes, Amazon and the band’s website. Digital pre-orders will come with an instant download of “Don’t Wanna Fight,” while the album is also available on either 180-gram vinyl or limited edition clear vinyl. A full track list is below.
The Alabama Shakes also have numerous tour dates lined up in support of Sound & Color, including sets at Coachella and Bonnaroo, and a just-announced headlining gig at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday, August 16th with the Drive-By Truckers. The band will also appear on an upcoming episode of Live from the Artist Den, premiering on public television stations this week (a complete schedule is available on the show’s website).
