News
• A sizeable majority of Americans support the Occupy Wall Street movement and its broad goal of greater economic fairness, according to a new survey (59 percent of adults either completely agree or mostly agree with the protesters, while 31 percent mostly disagree or completely disagree). What’s more, a hefty 68 percent approve of a surtax on millionaires to pay for the president’s jobs plan. [National Journal]
• Feminist author Naomi Wolf was arrested at Occupy Wall Street protest outside an award ceremony held to honor New York’s governor Andrew Cuomo. [Politico]
• Occupy Wall Street New York protesters have received $435,000 in donations, — $85,000 of it donated in person at Zuccotti Park. The money will go toward food, laundry an, especially, equipment such as laptops and cameras, and costs associated with streaming video of the protest on the Internet. [AP]
• The Republican National Committee is attacking Democrats for failing to condemn “extreme anti-Semitic, anti-Israel comments” reported at the Occupy Wall Street protests. There doesn’t seem to be any doubt that such views have been expressed – such as the old standby that “Jews control Wall Street” – but according to the Anti-Defamation League (anti-anti-Semitism organization), there’s “no evidence that these incidents are widespread” or representative. • Anthony Bologna, the New York City cop who used pepper spray on Occupy Wall Street protesters last month, violated department guidelines, an internal NYPD review has found. He faces a loss of 10 vacation days as punishment. [AP]
