Twitter Tops One Million Apps, Embraces Developers
Twitter has announced that over one million apps are now available for its online microblogging platform.
According to the social media service, the number of compatible applications currently offered for download has grown from 150,000 just one year ago, with a new app registered every 1.5 seconds. Over 750,000 developers worldwide have contributed to the pool of software programs. From TweetDeck to HootSuite and TwitPic, many have captured the imagination of everyday Internet users, Fortune 500 corporations and the technorati alike, which Twitter says has led investors to dump $500 million into the companies behind them.
While Twitter has had a sometimes contentious relationship with the third-party software community, buying or attempting to circumvent services which piggyback on its platform, the company has also reaffirmed its support for developers. According to the firm, a new Twitter Developer site where employees and external creators can share discussion and resources is designed to further this objective. “The entire Twitter team is committed to investing in the ecosystem by listening to developers and enabling them with the right tools and information,” it says.
