Megaupload Drops Lawsuit Against Universal Music Group
Megaupload has dropped its lawsuit against Universal Music Group in the wake of the company being shut down on piracy charges by the United States Department of Justice. The company, run by German entrepreneur Kim Dotcom, had filed a suit against the music conglomerate over an allegedly unlawful takedown of the “Megaupload Mega Song” video, which featured endorsements of the file-sharing service from several pop stars including Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown and Diddy.
Megaupload dropped the suit against UMG on Friday without prejudice, which means that they could revive the claims at a later date if they wish. The company has not dropped claims against anonymous people involved in the takedown of the video, and will continue to push Google to reveal records regarding the removal of the song from YouTube. UMG had the “Megaupload Mega Song” removed from YouTube based on piracy filters established with YouTube as part of the company’s contractual agreements with the streaming video giant.
