Beyonce Celebrates a Year of Fashion Success with ‘Sartorial Duty’ Video
When it comes to modern R&B achievements, Beyoncé is more or less peerless. She’s swiftly gaining recognition as a fashion trailblazer, too, and 2011 proved to be a particularly mighty year on that front. In addition to continuing to show that she’s “worth it” as L’Oreal’s reigning celebrity spokesmodel, the singer and actress escalated her own clothing label House of Deréon’s international presence, walked in a seismically hyped catwalk show for Tom Ford and was christened by Vogue as one of their Best Dressed of the Year (alongside sister Solange). All these milestones, plus many more, are captured in “Sartorial Duty,” a new compilation video uploaded to Beyoncé’s Youtube channel just before New Year’s Eve.
Essentially a parade of Bey’s memorable recent style moments set to her most glamorous tunes, “Sartorial Duty” also is ripe with praise from the elite ranks of the designers who dress her. Red carpet titan Roberto Cavalli hails the singer’s presence in one of his gowns as “harmony.” Courtier Azzedine Alaïa, who recently wardrobed the singer for Jones magazine, calls her a “beautiful, elegant woman” and says her “invigorating” music “really brightens [his] mood and fits [his] imagination”. Meanwhile, Tom Ford, the former Gucci designer who redefined what sex meant to fashion and revitalized that statement by putting Beyoncé on his own Fall 2011 runway, states simply: “[She] is a force.” Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci even jests that he “can’t wait for [her] to give birth” so he can see her back in his designs.
Interestingly, the video for “Countdown,” arguably her most eye-catching moment of 2011, is not featured in the clip. Then again, some statements simply stand alone.
