Nineties Alert: Ginger Spice Revives the Union Jack Dress
The Spice Girls‘ reunion tour may come too late to cash in on the current Nineties nostalgia craze, but Ginger Spice’s own style revivalism is right on schedule. She’s creating an entire fashion range based on her infamous Union Jack dress, one of the most memorable symbols of 1990s pop and the “Cool Brittania” movement. The iconic costume sold for £41,320 (approx. $65,000) in 1998, a year after Ginger first wore it for the Spice Girls’ career-peaking BRIT Awards performance, but its cheeky spirit lived on as the ultimate Spice symbol. Its eventual resurrection seemed inevitable, especially as 2012 looks to be a banner year for flag-waving Brits and tourists.
Halliwell agrees. “The Union Jack dress was my favorite stage outfit and with everything that is happening this year, such as the Olympics and the Jubilee, it just felt the right time to design an updated version of the dress.”
Starting in March, her range will sell at NEXT, a UK high street retailer comparable to H&M. All of the items, including bikinis and lingerie, sport the tricolor theme. The collection’s centerpiece is a sequined recreation of the dress itself, retailing for £199 ($314).
In related news, Halliwell confirms that the Spice Girls will reunite once more to commemorate the Jubilee.
