News Roundup: Dr. Dre Under Fire from PETA, Solange Knowles Signs Modeling Contract
• Dr. Dre and designer Oscar de la Renta are in trouble with PETA for using fur to line a set of $695 headphones that they collaborated on last year. The luxury headphones, sold via Oscar de la Renta’s website, are covered in “luxe silver fox” fur dyed a shade of burgundy. Activist Michelle Cho sent an open letter to Dr. Dre on behalf of PETA asking him to”keep fur and exotic-animal skins out of [his] Beats by Dre designs.” Thus far, neither Dr. Dre nor de la Renta have commented on the situation.
• Thom Yorke’s name isn’t one usually associated with fashion, but with the recent online emergence of his ethereal Rag & Bone soundtrack, he’s becoming less of a stranger to that set. In fact, he’s also modeling clothing by Japanese avant-garde clothing brand Undercover in a cover editorial for HUGE. See Yorke’s spread here.
• Lana Del Rey isn’t NEXT Model Management’s only famous new signee. Solange Knowles just inked a deal with the company as well. The singer, who has modeled for sister Beyoncé‘s line House of Dereon as well as for Rimmel and Armani Jeans, told Vogue.co.uk that she is thrilled. “I feel right at home working with people who have worked beside such creative forces in the world,” she said.
• Lady Gaga is on the next cover of L’Uomo Vogue, which hits newsstands Tuesday. Her connection to the art world is examined by Italian critic Francesco Bonami. Her “body is not a territory to be conquered, but a stage for new sets to be installed,” he writes.
• Gaga’s monthly fashion column makes its debut within the new V music issue, the cover of which features Justin Bieber (incidentally wearing Thierry Mugler, the line directed by Gaga stylist Nicola Formichetti). However, her first column is actually more a tribute to the singer: instead of penning it herself, her favorite designers “do the talking for her.”
• Black Swan stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis both have new Christian Dior ad campaigns under their belts. Portman, who has been modeling for Dior for several seasons, has a new Diorshow mascara ad out, while Kunis has landed the enviable role of fronting the French luxury label’s entire Spring 2012 campaign.
• Eve Arnold, who shot some of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous photographs, died last week at age 99.
